With age, the natural balance between the formation of harmful free radicals and their neutralization by antioxidants is destroyed as a result of the progressive decline with age in the level of antioxidants in the tissues, leading to their aging and the onset or worsening of health problems.
The massive intake of these antioxidants is carried out in elderly subjects with a view to: – maintaining optimal brain functioning,
– extending life expectancy by helping to maintain immune defenses, the condition of renal and joint tissues, and good heart function.
If the prevention of aging (however inevitable) is the preferred indication, SOFCANIS Canin Senior can benefit from an additional antioxidant activity that is always favorable after serious problems, in association with the appropriate treatment.
Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant that facilitates energy production by mitochondria and plays an essential role in the proper functioning of heart tissue and the maintenance of cognitive capabilities. It has a sparing effect on the use of vitamin E and synergizes its stimulating effect on immune function.
Vitamin E has the essential action of protecting the phospholipids of cell membranes from peroxidation: it actively participates in the membrane structure by forming complexes which stabilize it and avoid very destructive chain reactions. It acts in synergy with other antioxidant systems including the enzymes glutathione peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase. Selenium is necessary for the enzyme glutathione peroxidase which removes peroxides. Vitamin E and selenium deficiency leads to damage to the cell walls of muscle fibers and the membranes of intracellular organelles (including mitochondria).
Vitamin C, which regenerates vitamin E, is not stored in the body, hence the need for a daily intake. It protects cells by participating in the degradation of oxygenated free radicals and preserves tissue vitamin E.
Arginine, independently of its favorable activity on muscle tissue, prevents the reduction of coenzyme Q10 in the heart. -
